Nature of Study
Protecting and nurturing the young is a universal goal across human cultures. An abundance of research from various fields confirms the importance of the family unit as the provider of safe, stable, and nurturing environments for children. Unquestionably, children who are rise in safe and stable environments have better short- and long-term adjustment than children who are exposed to harmful experiences. Moreover, research reveals that children exposed to violent, dangerous, and/or highly unstable environments are more expected to experience developmental difficulties. Children exposed to violence within their homes experience the most deleterious results. For instance, children exposed to physical maltreatment often experience impairments in their physical health, cognitive development, academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and mental health. Erratic, insecure home environments and requirement of continuity and constancy in care giving are also linked with poor developmental outcomes.
The aim of foster care is to provide healthy parents to children who have been subjected to an insecure and unstable environment. The child is removed from the present negative living situation and placed in an arranged new environment. Through positive recognition with the foster parent the adolescent will grow and change (Schor, 1993). The age of children in foster care range from birth to the age of eighteen, but mainly they are adolescents. Foster care is a component of Child and Youth Services. Adolescents are positioned in a new home setting to escape a stressed or dangerous living situation. The reasons adolescents live in foster care include:
- Physical, sexual, or/and mental abuse
- Neglect
- Abandonment
- Drug/alcohol abuse
