His persona appears most clearly in Rashid, the Shah of Blah, a father and storyteller who loses his ability to create. But, as Rushdie exists somewhat concretely as Rashid, diverse aspects of his personality, such as selfishness, self mockery, and dread, appear in other characters.
Haroun Khalifa lives in the country of Alifbay, in a city so gloomy that its populace has forgotten its name. In spite of the infuse sadness, Haroun’s father, Rashid, is amazingly cheerful. Rashid is a famous storyteller. He knows so many stories and tells them so luminously that he is identified as the “Ocean of Notions” and the “Shah of Blah.”
