Introduction

America’s high school students have higher educational ambition than ever before. Eighty-eight percent of 8th graders expect to contribute in some form of postsecondary education (National Center for Education Statistics), these educational aspirations cut across racial and ethnic lines. However it is a fact that American high school students are not effectively prepared for their futures. More and more businesses demand workers with postsecondary education and training. Students appear to understand this, but there is a severe disengagement between aspirations and preparation.  There are several reasons for this in adequate preparation of students:

  • Wrong mix of courses in high school
  • Disjointed system
  • Students take less demanding educational courses

Wrong Mix of Courses in High School

Yet, little more than half actually take a mix of academic classes in high school that will plan them for success either in college or today’s workplace. The courses they do take regularly fail to maintain their interest in school at all. The results are high dropout rates and “drift-outs” – college students who do not return for a second year of college. A large number of these students stagger at the starting line, requiring remediation in math, reading and writing, and other basic subjects before they can enroll in-level courses.
