In the past decade, managers and academics have invested substantial effort in developing methods for actively managing knowledge in organizations (Despres and Chauvel, 2000). The idea that organizations can analytically improve the use of employees’ knowledge became well customary by the turn of the millennium, though to date there is no consensus on how best this can be achieved. Knowledge repositories are key components of a codification strategy for managing knowledge. Hansen et al. (1999), Markus (2001) and Zack (1999) describe in detail an assortment of ways that knowledge repositories can preserve and provide access to codified knowledge. It can be hard to ensure that these repositories provide content that is useful, accurate and current; still, organizations that seek to advance employees’ access to explicit knowledge are progressively more turning to these systems.
Knowledge management’s (KM) applicability and usefulness are wide ranging. As the purpose of desktop technologies is enhanced to include content management, collaboration, profiling, and so on, KM will begin to play a much more important role in business processes.
Although improved technological features influence KM’s growth and adoption rates, the idea that it is neither a technology nor a function but a set of principles to which an organization or group of people subscribe is still suitable. Thinking of it in any other way will, by default, limit knowledge management’s potential. Whether or not an organization has a proper KM program or designated individuals responsible for the management of knowledge, this ideology can be adopted.
