This essay discusses issues related to education. From the students’ viewpoint, the new system at Harvard is more advantageous for them as they would now have more freedom to pick and choose their own courses, in addition now the students are not bound to choose their major at the end of the freshman year.

The idea of general education and core curriculum will in future be more of an ideal rather than a practically applicable theory because of the changing trends globally. According to McGrath (2006) even the history of Harvard and the instruction method has changed over a period of time.
There are two fundamental philosophies that are present today and can be seen in terms of what the students should know in terms of knowledge; the traditionalist conservative great-books style, adopted by Columbia and University of Chicago that emphasized core curriculum.
The other extreme of the spectrum is the Brown University system which has no core curricular system and instead the students are empowered to choose what they want to study with a strong advisory system. This system may be part of the emerging voices (Howarth and Conrad) who believe that that the core curriculum system is not only out-dated, incomplete and distorted it is a system which based on a false understanding, instead knowledge is a social construct. Here knowledge is not based on absolute, but on the person and his or her interaction with the culture and cultural outcomes.
