This essay discusses inclusion of students with special educational needs. Those who argue for the inclusion of students with special educational needs in the general classroom do so for at least two separate reasons. The first of these is that the special needs students will benefit. This does not mean that they will necessarily learn as much from each lesson as will those children without disabilities.

The second reason is that the general education student will also benefit by having friends who are very different in their abilities and challenges. Being educated alongside special-needs children provides a number of benefits to general education children, including:

  • The opportunity to develop respect for people’s differing abilities
  • The opportunity to learn sensitivity towards human limitations
  • The opportunity to help others, and to feel empowered by this fact
  • The opportunity to increase empathetic skills
