In this hopeful atmosphere the NAACP amplified the percentage of registered black voters in the South from 2 to 12 percent. Eleanor Roosevelt conducted an experiment forming two units of Black airmen, known today as the Tuskegee Airmen, after the Alabama College where they qualified. Although Southern Congressmen tried to kill the program, the two units proved to be in part two of the most effective units in the Army Air Corps. This was in part because the rival of the program put such strict limits on it that the men involved were of particularly high caliber. Many Black soldiers wondered about fighting racist NAZI Germany when they tackled racism at home. Black soldiers who risked their lives on battlefields in World War II, a war fought to crush the racist philosophy of Nazism, were determined that America should live up to its democratic creed.
