This term paper discusses the uses of information technology in organizational settings. At The literatures on job design (e.g. Parker and Wall, 1998; Trist and Bamforth, 1951) and job characteristics (Turner and Lawrence, 1965) suggest that jobs involving repetitive and undemanding tasks have a pessimistic effect on motivation, employee commitment and involvement.
Although knowledge repositories are applications of information technology, they vary considerably in their goals from traditional information technology. Specifically, such repositories are less concerned with replacing human effort with technology and more focused on eradicating redundant human effort (Hansen et al., 1999). Rather than replace individuals with technology, knowledge repositories reduce future expenditure of human effort by making accessible the knowledge that resulted from previous related efforts (although this process is not quite as simple as it may sound; see Markus, 2001 for a detailed review). With such a basic difference in goals, the effects of knowledge repositories on power and control are likely to differ from those linked with traditional information technology.
Information technology produces information about the rate or quality of work, the pace of work is recorded in a way that can be used to evaluate speed of performance across employees or across time. Information about work quality may also be recorded like, the rate of callbacks on repair jobs.
Employees cannot be anticipated to find fulfillment in their jobs when such is the result of the introduction of technology. However, it seems doubtful that the introduction of knowledge repositories would have an impact on how routine a job is. A significant portion of knowledge work is context-specific (Drucker, 1994); even with the introduction of knowledge repositories, knowledge work still necessitate considerable discretion to produce solutions that are customized to specific settings.
