This essay discusses the invasion of the jellyfish. In light of the rising consciousness of man’s increasing influence on biological, chemical and even physical proceedings in the oceans, there is need to think that in some regions, new blooms of jellyfish are happening in response to some of the cumulative effects of these impacts. Over the past several years, we have accepted a dramatic increase in the abundance of jellyfish in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Over the past several years, we have accepted a dramatic increase in the abundance of jellyfish in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Although most people do not understand it, jellyfish and other gelatinous organisms are amid the top predators in estuaries and oceans. These predators eat mainly microscopic swimming crustaceans, but they also eat the eggs and larvae of many fish species, as well as other jellyfish. Thus, they can be harmful to fish populations by eating the same prey, as well as eating the young fish straight. Because they may increase diversity in the environment by eating a wide variety of foods, including other jellyfish, and thereby encourage stability in their ecosystems, they can be measured keystone predators.

Scientists are not yet sure why there has been such a boost in jellyfish abundance, or why we are seeing exotic species in high numbers. Moon jellies and sea nettles are natural members of the  local ecosystem and are not thought to be “nuisance species” until their numbers are extremely high, as in blooms.
