Islam came into society as a religion in 622 AD. Islam was founded by Prophet Mohammed. The religion was founded in the city of Makkah; Mecca as it is also known is a city now in Saudi Arabia. Muslims, the followers of Islam believe in Allah as their God; ‘Allah’ meaning the true God. Muslims believe in the Qu’ran which is their holy book.
This book is not an ordinary book; it is considered to be the word of God which was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. The word Islam has its origins in the Arabic word and this word means to submit. The followers of this religion and those who put their faith in Allah and submit to Him are known as Muslims (World Religions).
The Prophet Mohammed was born in the city of Mecca. The followers and believers of Islam believe that since 610 AD, Mohammed had started to receive revelations from Allah. These revelations were brought to him by an angel known as Gabriel. The messages from Allah through Gabriel came to Mohammed over a period of 22 years while the Prophet stayed in Mecca and in Medina in Saudi Arabia. The revelations which Mohammed received were then compiled into the book which we now know as the Qu’ran. This holy book is said to be containing the words of Allah and it is hence the sacred book for the Muslims. The bases of Islamic law are based on the teachings of the Qu’ran (World Book Online).
