Through a series of military and political moves, Silla achieved dominance over most of the Korean peninsula by the end of the seventh century. Its crusade of unification began with the defeat of the Kaya Federation in 562, after which a coalition with the Chinese Tang court helped Silla to conquer the kingdoms of Paekche. By 676, Silla succeeded in forcing the Chinese troops to withdraw into Manchuria, and for the first time in history, the peninsula came under the sway of a single Korean government. In the following Unified Silla dynasty, Korean culture flourished, creating a political and cultural inheritance that was handed down to subsequent rulers of the country.
The new government supported Buddhism as the state religion. The religion’s influence on the arts intensified during this period as the number of Buddhist adherents increased and the religion began to pervade all layers of society. In fact, some of the most sophisticated and elegant Buddhist art and architecture in East Asia was produced in Korea during this time.
The Unified Silla court preserves close relations with Tang China through trade and diplomatic and scholarly exchanges. The constant flow of Korean travelers to China, and the occasional intrepid pilgrim to India, contributed to a growing receptiveness to foreign ideas. .
