Mary Crow Dog’s novel “Lakota Woman,” appears to be an account of one woman’s life; however, it tells the story of Indian women who have suffer the anger and arrogance of the men in their lives, and the aggression of government power in addition to several other ordeals and problems. For Mary Crow Dog, her background and tradition play a key role in her life. But, this goes much deeper than being Indian. It means many things like being half-breed who is unwanted by a predominantly white father, it also means being born in a hospital instead of being delivered in the traditional Indian way, and also being unable to understand her culture to make her more white.
Crow Dog is a Sioux who spends her childhood in poverty on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Her father is a truck driver who leaves her mother even before Mary’s birth born. Although she sees him twice but he never recognizes her existence. Crow Dog faces serious emotional problems and in the story she uses vivid expressions and ideas to express the revulsion she feels at having a mixed heritage. She speaks of always having wished to cleanse the white blood from her body, and waiting for the summer in order to be tan look more like a Native American.
