This is a random excerpt from an essay on life of an old black woman in the United States. It discusses issues related to racial prejudices and discriminations against the blacks. The Great Depression had a considerable and wide-ranging impression on the lives of Americans. Bodily and psychologically, it was distressing to many people, who not only required enough food, shelter, and clothing but felt they were to blame for their desperate state. Although few people died from starvation, many did not have enough to eat.
Harlem Renaissance was the first important movement of black artists and writers in the US. Centered in Harlem, NY, and other urban areas during the 1920s, black writers published more than ever before. She remembers her parents discussing the meetings they used to attend, although her father was a grocer, but he loved to read and was active in fighting for equal rights, her early consciousness cab be attributed to that.
But the 1930’s are very clear in her mind, The Great Depression had a considerable and wide-ranging impression on the lives of Americans. Although few people died from starvation, many did not have enough to eat. She can remember how her father’s shop was near empty for so many years, no group was harder hit than African Americans. By 1932, approximately half of black Americans were out of work. In some Northern cities, whites called for blacks to be fired from any jobs as long as there were whites out of work. Racial violence again became more common. She remembers starving families particularly children. She remembers people scouring garbage dumps for food or ate weeds. The psychological impact was equally damaging.
