This term paper is on the life of Hmongs in the United States. As any other person would have felt I feel very upset whenever I think of strangers snatching away someone’s child forcibly, supposedly for their good or the child’s interest, however whenever it is done it is a great injustice.

Especially in the case of Lia, whose parents were immigrants from a totally different culture, did not know English, and were used to going to traditional healers for their ailments. To me this was an act of ignorance and intolerance particularly when the people knew that the parents loved their child. Consequently, her health did not improve after putting her in foster care, in fact her health deteriorated.

The basic problem was communications in spite of their best intentions the healthcare providers were not successful in reaching out to Lia’s parents, instead of making them understand through an interpreter what was going on trying to communicate with them in order to achieve their goal of improving the child’s condition. Her lack of response to medicine was constantly blamed on her parents and nothing was done to observe that she was not responding to any of the medicine. This could have been avoided initially if they would have looked for somebody with whom these people could relate to.

The life of the Hmong is very different from their life in their native land. Their arrival into the country was as refugees fleeing away from the repressive communist, however when they arrived here it was as if coming to another planet, everything was totally different from their original lifestyle and traditions, they had to learn a new language, adopt strange customs, go to doctors instead of consulting shamans.
