This is an article review on Making it in China by Christopher Koch. The recent recall of toys made in China by Mattel Corporation shows that there is inadequate inspection of the toys at the time of manufacturing and that there is a lack of coordination between the producer and the management of the toy manufacturer.
Different companies have dealt differently with different situations in their own unique way. IBM for instance started its own packaging system to decrease the number of damaged products. Pacific Cycle’s faced lack of automated information systems as the factories were not equipped to deal with sophisticated systems so the company went back to manual method and increased their lead time to compensate. Watts Water Technologies on the other hand started buying out manufacturing units from the local concerns and set them up in a more modern and updated way so they could be compatible with the mother company.
