The first Chinese restaurant in Newcastle opened in 1949 in Scotswood Road, Called the Marlbrough Cafe, it caused something of a stir by opening seven days a week from 10:00am to 11:00pm. A three-course lunch was available at a cost of a shilling and three pence. There was an anticipated Chinese population in the North East of just 30 people in 1949.
The development of Stowell Street as a Chinese quarter only goes back to 1982.
