The various media from newspapers to television to radio are owned by large corporations who control and filter the news, deciding what news the audience should see, showing trivial and marginally important news compared to important occurrences like the protest in Seattle, when WTO meeting was being held there, as the protesters were against globalization and taking over of corporations and multilateral agencies like International Monetary Fund, World Bnk and WTO which safeguard the interests of these large corporations.

This according to the author summarizes that the corporations have only one agenda, to maximize their profits and the important news is sidelined in favor of trivial and sensational news. The large corporations are manipulating the important information that is very necessary for any democratic system. Knowing that media is a very important part of an American’s life it is vital to make it an issue as the author notes.

Less then ten conglomerates control media in USA and this concentration has occurred in the recent past. These corporations are also linked with each other in cartel like arrangements; this has led to hyper commercialization and denigration of public service.

This hyper commercialization is not only harming the democracy but is also hurting journalism. The very integrity of journalists like Woodward and Bernstein is   under attack by the corporations. Less expensive and less controversial features are encouraged with cutting down on staff. The main effect is that commercial values manipulate how and what news would be most profitable. As a result the stories revolve around people and trivial issues ignoring the major issues and even politics.
