I was one of those people nearing famine when I decided to leave my beloved homeland to travel to United states, hoping primarily to get some food for myself, at the age of seventeen I boarded a ship going to New York to find a better life for myself, and after hearing so much expecting to achieve my “American dream.”
On 23rd October 1862, I saw New York, it was a foggy morning and my young mind was expecting to see happy sated people ready to welcome me with open arms. But what I really encountered was a busy metropolis gradually waking up. In a few days I realized that finding work should be my first priority so in earnest my started looking for work.
Workers were in ever-increasing demand during the booms of this time, so the industries found themselves looking for new sources of employees. Immigrants overflowing into America during the Gilded Age helped in finding cheap workers. From 1865-1890, 10 million northwestern Europeans settled permanently into the U.S. From 1890-1914, the pattern shifted to the eastern parts of Europe as 15 million people emigrated. While Irish like me came primarily for famine.
