In children the virus may result in a mild illness that looks like a common respiratory infection. In older adults, Mononucleosis causes more severe signs and symptoms and lasts longer.

Detection and Treatment

Doctor may suspect mononucleosis based on signs and symptoms and a physical test.If there’s a need for additional confirmation, a Monospot test is normally done to check blood for antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus. (Hoffman, 2005)

In most cases of mononucleosis, no specific treatment is used. The illness is usually self-limited and passes much the way other common viral illnesses resolve. Available antiviral drugs have no major effect on the overall outcome of mononucleosis and may in fact prolong the course of the illness. Occasionally, a strep throat occurs which is best treated with penicillin or erythromycin.

Ampicillin and amoxicillin should be avoided since patients develop a rash when they take these medications. Essentially, supportive or comfort measures are all that is needed. Medication can be given for fever and head and body ache. A sufficient amount of sleep and rest is very important. The throat soreness is worst during the first five to seven days of illness and then subsides over the next seven to ten days. The swollen tender glands normally subside by the third week.
