This essay discusses obsessive compulsive disorder. It is a problem which can last a lifetime. This problem is such that an individual does one thing repeatedly. The symptoms which are related to this problem are mainly obsession and compulsion.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a problem which can last a lifetime. This problem is such that an individual does one thing repeatedly. The symptoms which are related to this problem are mainly obsession and compulsion.

Having an obsession can be seen as a negative, unwelcoming mental image which comes into the mind (Schwartz). A thought which is an obsession causes a person to eventually become anxious and distressed. Compulsions are behaviors which people having this disorder perform. These behaviors are carried out as a way for them to rid themselves of the fear and distress which is being caused by the obsessions which they have (Schwartz). OCD is a problem which generally begins in the early years of childhood and is even more commonly found than diabetes or asthma (Baer). Obsessive compulsive disorder is a disorder which is seen to affect 1out of every 40 people and around 5 million individuals in America (Baer).

This disorder is one which can be effectively treated without the use of drugs. This is due to the fact that this disorder occurs due to an imbalance occurring in the human brain. The very first thing which occurs is the ‘Brain lock’ after which the disorder begins (Schwartz). Different structures found in the brain lock together which causes the brain to send wrong messages. The individual himself is then not even able to understand that these messages are false (Schwartz). The main center in the brain which sends signals and is responsible for processing them is made up of structures known as the caudate nucleus and put amen.
