There are millions of different bacteria that thrive in the mouth. The mouth provides a supportive environment for their growth and development. And since teeth are hard and don’t shed their surface cells it is very easy to have microorganisms in and around them.  These accumulations are called dental plaque and help in the formation of tooth decay. These bacteria convert the starch and carbohydrates into lactic acid which affects the tooth enamel. Although there are many different types of bacteria which may cause caries and/or gum disease or Periodontitis, however the most common is streptococcus mutans, which is a gram positive coccus.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that hold up the teeth.  There is inflammation and degeneration of the support of the teeth. The gum tissue is not attached to the teeth as high as it may appear. There is a very low v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. Periodontal diseases assails just below the gum line in the sulcus, where it impacts the attachment of the tooth and it’s supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are injured, the sulcus develops into a pocket: usually, the more severe the disease, the greater the depth of the pocket.
