According to Omoregie Ngugi believes that African literature should be read in the historical context.  For instance according to him neocolonialism is present in today in Africa because even after independence the economy, the political framework and social culture was influenced by colonial thought and doctrine. In addition it is important to analyze the political social and economic influences and contradictions which were created by colonialism. This is necessary to successfully control and counterbalance neocolonialism.  In his work “Writing Against Neocolonialism” Ngugi demonstrates the development of African literature as a reaction to the historical conditions that existed and which were significant in the influencing the ideology and the function of the African writers including himself. Omoregie observes that Ngugi contends that the African writers had three stages of growth: (Omoregie)

  • anti-colonial struggle,
  • independence,
  • Neocolonialism.

Ngugi believes that writing in foreign languages also is a part of neocolonialism and all the literature that is in English is not pure African literature but Euro-African Literature.  Because of this philosophy he wrote Devil on the Cross in Gikuyu. Some including Omoregie believe that writing in the native language dilutes the effect as many things are lost in translation.
