This is a term paper on preventative measures for drug abuse. The most important action is to take steps to prevent drug abuse in the young population. The prevention programs can both be at individual and institutional level.

The traditional practice in the past was to reach targeted sets of teens in school setting. Conversely, now it has become more widespread to find programs for adolescents in different situations. Basically three kinds of programs are planned: (NIDA)

         Universal Programs are there for the common population, like all students in a school.

         Selective Programs are meant for teens that are at a greater risk like those students who don’t perform well at school or those whose parents are drug abusers.

         Indicated Programs are for teens that have started using drugs.

These programs can be run at different levels, at home by involving the family at the community level and also at the school. The success of any preventative program depends on the organization and the structure of the program. How the different strategies and plans are carried out. In addition the way the plan is implemented and how it is considered by the community. (NIDA)
