The war on drugs is little more than a drained out, disastrously augmented description of the exclusion of alcohol earlier this century. It has brought back the crime and drive-by shootings of the 1920s, allowed unprecedented violation of property rights, and hindered the development of life-saving drugs. It refutes the civil rights and independence of American people and disagrees with the entirety of our political inheritance. The war on drugs is nothing less than a war on America.( Miranda, Joseph)
The offensive term war on drugs exemplifies the dilemmas that can expand from using lost military metaphors. The alleged war on drugs is not the “greatest war in U.S. history,” as some have maintained, since the effort to reduce substance abuse is not a war. If we use the term war for any continued proposal, we could term education the “war on unawareness.” Then we might quarrel inaccurately that as American schools were unsuccessful to stamp out unawareness in spite of centuries of schooling, the country has lost what is truthfully the greatest “war” and consequently should close all schools. In fact, the United States is a lot closer to reducing substance abuse. Drug use among adults is down nearly 50 percent from its high point in the late 1970s. We have been winning with Americans who are mature enough to make sound, informed decisions. The current reduction (13 percent in just the past year) in prohibited drug use by youth shows that we are on the correct path in our efforts to teach forthcoming generations to keep away from the dangers of addictive drugs.( Bertram, Eva Sharpe)
