Red Badge of Courage by Stephan Crane and Beloved by Toni Morrison are two very different works different in the time and setting of the works. However both the books portray the struggle of life and people through the book, particularly the civil war. On one hand Morrison’s book deals with racial injustice and struggle against slavery, and the conditions during slavery. Crane shows how the war is meaningless and inane compared to what goes on in the lives of people and how those fighting don’t know and care about what they are fighting for.

In Beloved, Ms. Morrison turns away from the contemporary scene. This new novel is set after the end of the Civil War, during the period of Reconstruction, when a great deal of random violence was let loose upon blacks, both the slaves freed by Emancipation and others who had been given or had bought their autonomy earlier. But there are flashbacks to a more remote period, when slavery was still prevalent in the South. The setting is likewise divided: the countryside near Cincinnati, where the central characters have ended up, and a slave-holding plantation in Kentucky, ironically named Sweet Home, from which they fled 18 years before the novel opens.
