Rococo style reflected the views of the aristocracy. The rococo art was simple in its message and used light and pastel shades and delicate figures. However this style was representative of the frivolous and trivial times of the French aristocracy and eventually led to the French revolution.
The neoclassicists were influenced by classic Greek and Roman art. The neoclassical revived the Greek and Roman themes like morality and perfection. It was a rebellion against the “fluffiness” of the rococo, but the political turmoil in Europe particularly France brought the reaction. In this chaotic atmosphere the artists turned to higher achievement and a sense of order which was missing. (Neoclassical Art)
The Swing by Jean-Honore Fragonard (1766) is a classic example of Rococo style as the painting is almost dream like as a young woman is being pushed on the swing by a priest towards a young man. The lighter pastel shades and almost dreamlike illustration shows that nothing in this picture is real.
The oath of Horatii by Jacques Louis David (1784) is a typical example of the neoclassical works of the late eighteenth century. The moral stance of the brother and their principles so clearly depicted in the picture show the high moral ground and heroic stand of the neoclassicists.
