This is a film review on The Scarlett Letter. This movie shows that religion was the most important thing for the people at that time, especially in the early puritanical settlements where all actions were judged and all decisions were taken in the light of religion.

This movie shows that religion was the most important thing for the people at that time, especially in the early puritanical settlements where all actions were judged and all decisions were taken in the light of religion. Religion is central to the community it is not something which is separate from the day-to-day lives of the people, neither is it a personal thing which is observed by each individual. Far from being unimportant religion it is imposed on people’s private lives too.

This movie tries to show religion negatively trying to convey the message that adultery which was thought to be something which was shameful and immoral at that time and those committing adultery were treated in the cruelest way was actually very wrong. It also shows that using religion the people of that time interfered in the lives of people which were something which was not acceptable.

Even though the movie is quite similar to the book as it has almost the same characters, however this movie is very badly made because instead of dealing with hypocrisy and rigid morals, the only thing it really does is to condemn the puritan lifestyle, not because of their pretenses but because of their rules on affairs. It is quite shallow in this regard.

The movie shows that there is a definite clash between the society and religion as religion is shown to dominate the whole society and as it tries to restrict individuals and their private lives. The religious leaders try to impose their narrow views on the people like Hester.
