This is an essay on A Slice of Life by Gordon Grice. It is about how human body is regarded, giving the example of a convict who died on death row, Joseph Jernigan donated his body, but he was not aware what it would be used for, may be thought his organs would be donated, however, his body was and is being used a s the first visible Human Male.

The second essay by Gordon Grice is about how human body is regarded, giving the example of a convict who died on death row, Joseph Jernigan donated his body, but he was not aware what it would be used for, may be thought his organs would be donated, however, his body was and is being used a s the first visible Human Male, almost every imagined angle and piece of his body was saved through MRI’s CT Scans and digital cameras, and these images are not only used by the medical professions but also by Million others.

Grice discusses how human body was always regarded as sacred and after the ancient Greeks a thousand years passed before humans were observed from inside, and that too was only limited to the medical profession. However death and the human body are no more sacred entities as technological development has impacted death too.  In seventies Von Hagen a German discovered a way of preserving cadavers through polymer infusion, however he made an exhibition out of it, which created a lot of controversy.

The author’s view is that death and dead bodies are not given the same treatment and respect they were accorded in the past, Jernigan’s body’s display which should have aroused some ethical concerns has not and people use his images and view it on their PC’s and television, since to them it holds no reality, as technology has started draining away emotions, just like Von Hagen’s display.
