Schizophrenia and other psychotic diseases cause a lot of suffering and pain to the victims. These kinds of diseases lead to absences from work, loss of jobs and other social problems. However the fact is that a lot is not known about Schizophrenia. Many studies show that schizophrenia occurs in people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. However it is not clear yet whether schizophrenia causes people to stay at the bottom end of the society or whether the circumstances encountered trigger the disease. According to the authors it is important to understand the relationship between social factors and psychosis. However for years research into the social factors related to psychosis have virtually not been done. Some suggest the theory of social drift while others show the theory of social causation. However most of the studies are inconclusive as the largest study shows that there is no association between social class at birth and development of psychosis. In this particular research the aim was to study if social factors add to the risk of developing schizophrenia and other similar diseases, a large population of 2.1 million Swedish children born in 1963-1983 were studied in the national inpatient register from 1987 to 2002 and connected to the national census from 1970 to 1990. Five social indicators during childhood were included in the analysis: parent’s socioeconomic position, adults in the family receiving social welfare benefits, parent’s unemployment, single-parent family, and housing situation.
