This essay compares On My First Son and For My Daughter written by Ben Johnson and Weldon Kees. these two poetries are very different one a father lamenting the loss of his son, and the other not desiring to add to the existing misery by rejecting the idea of the miracle of creating life, Kees is too frightened of the consequences he will have to face as a parent.
Thus these two poetries are very different one a father lamenting the loss of his son, and the other not desiring to add to the existing misery by rejecting the idea of the miracle of creating life, Kees is too frightened of the consequences he will have to face as a parent.
Kees baits the reader in to believing that his own child is essentially destined to cruel life with the rest of us. The descriptions are vivid and at the same time very repulsive, while reading the poem and before reaching the last line I felt completely repelled by the imagery, as one generally does not expect a parent to discuss his or her offspring in this manner.
The philosophy behind “For My Daughter,” (280) is representative of post modernist thought or a positivist statement, when the reader finds out that the speaker has no daughter, and besides desires none. This is a positive statement. The speaker portends a lot of the ideals of the approach of prosperous thinkers in the late 1960s & 1970s. The stark last line stands out against the highly descriptive horrors that come before in the rest of the sonnet. Thus parental love –three hundred years is replaced by Masochism and incest. Kees’ sardonic meditation on fatherhood the meter registers like increments of pain and longing:
“These speculations sour in the sun./ I have no daughter. I desire none.”, (l. 14, 280)
