This essay discusses the poem “My First Son” by Ben Johnson. one’s own child dying is felt in “on My First Son”. The suffering and the mood of misery of the subject is seen. The poem shows that his promise never to let anything get as close to himself as his son is the anger of someone who is not thinking undoubtedly. It is not possibly anyone who was clearly in great pain and distress be seriously taken at his word.
In sharp contrast, one’s own child dying is felt in “on My First Son”. The suffering and the mood of misery of the subject is seen. The poem shows that his promise never to let anything get as close to himself as his son is the anger of someone who is not thinking undoubtedly. It is not possibly anyone who was clearly in great pain and distress be seriously taken at his word. This causes the reader to assume that the writer is not thinking clearly and will ultimately become more reasonable while feeling the pain of losing someone very dear. By stating “Farewell” the reader knows that this must be a separation or good-bye. The situation is refined more in the succeeding sentences that clearly describe the death of his son.
The poem also seeks to gain sympathy for the writer, for what he has suffered. All through the poem, considerate thoughts have the reader feeling the pain of the circumstances, the grief of the loss. I feel how he feels; I feel the pain. However though he states his vows of not letting anyone this close but loving a person particularly his son is not condemned: little Ben continues to be ‘lov’d boy’ and there is no indication that the poet will not enjoy, in the future, ‘what he loves’. Jonson speaks instead about ‘too much hope’ and ‘like too much’. The difference, it may be, is nearly the distinction between loving and devotedness.
