This is a term paper on gay marriage. Amongst all the controversial issues which society has to deal with today, gay marriages is one of them. Many people believe that it is due to the media that the idea of same sex marriages came about but in the end, the topic can be viewed only from two sides.
Amongst all the controversial issues which society has to deal with today, gay marriages is one of them. Many people believe that it is due to the media that the idea of same sex marriages came about but in the end, the topic can be viewed only from two sides. Either people support the idea of homosexuals getting married or they oppose the idea. A supporter of homosexual marriage, Sullivan believes that marriage is everyone’s universal right and it is not something which is just restricted to heterosexuals (Sullivan). On the other hand, Bennett who is against same sex marriages believes that marriage is something which is sacred and very traditional. Therefore it should only be heterosexual couples (Bennett). This essay will talk about the views of both these authors and what they have to say in support of gay marriages as well as against it. This will be displayed by evaluating their styles and the evidence they provide.
A book known as ‘Let Gays Marry’ talks about why homosexuals should be given the permission and why they should be allowed to get married (Andrew Sullivan). According to him, people who are in love should not be stopped from marrying each other and if gays and homosexuals are given the right to get married, this does not result in anyone else’s rights being taken away (Sullivan). He believes that finding the right person with whom you want to spend the rest of your life is hard but once this is accomplished, people should be allowed to get married and their sex should not be taken into consideration (Sullivan). He goes on to say that nobody wants to take anybody else’s rights to marriage away and certainly no one is forcing a church to change their beliefs and principle. (Sullivan).
