This term paper discusses urban cultural tourism. Urban tourism, like cultural tourism is not a new trend, but it is frequently considered to be one the literature. What is original about it is that cities that have not customarily been regarded as tourist destinations.

However there are certain cities or classic cities are developing as urban cultural tourism places. Urban cultural  tourism has become ever more significant for many UK cities as it is  thought to have the  promise to generate employment, create prosperity and undo the economic recession that has influenced many large UK cities in this post industrial era.

For many of these cities across Europe and the UK  the function of culture has been fundamental in developing a tourism destination and drawing a tourism market in the achievement of an ‘experience economy’ (Richards, 2002: 225).  Some of these cultural capitals in Europe and the UK are Antwerp, Balboa, Genoa and Rotterdam, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester. These cities have been developed their tourism potential with clear proof of the role of culture, one sign of which was the fiercely fought bid procedure for the European Cultural Capital event of 2008. Ellis analyzes the aims of cultural policy which includes the creation of community pride, improving the image of the city and inviting internal investment and visitors, he notes

‘… The use of culture as a tool for urban regeneration and revitalisation has become one of the central planks of urban policy throughout the world’ (2003: 8).

Tourism based on the expansion of cultural attractions is now a major idea in global tourism and plays an important role in the revival and redevelopment of urban locations (Richards, 2001).
