This poem was written as a symbol of Blake’s abhorrence of the Church what it stood for and the people who ran it. What comes out from a single reading is the cold moral attitude of the churches. The Little Vagabond was written by the romantic poet William Blake. This poem was written as a symbol of Blake’s abhorrence of the Church what it stood for and the people who ran it. What comes out from a single reading is the cold moral attitude of the churches. The church, the ministers of the church and the church ritual in general is unfeeling and unfriendly. “Dear Mother, dear Mother, the Church is cold” this is the opening line of the poem. It is apparent that the young child is upset with his church because it is not satiating his thirst for love. The underlying theme running through the whole poem is that of alienation, hostility and isolation which the boy experiences from the church.
The Vagabond asks for something which he desires:
But the ale-house is healthy and pleasant and warm;
Besides I can tell where I am used well,
Such usage in Heaven will never do well
. In comparison to the Church the ale-house is a much more welcoming and comfortable place, even for a child —he considers the ale-house not only enjoyable but also more inviting then a church. In addition he believes that his use in the Ale-house is much more beneficial then what occurs in a church as in the child’s mind the work taken from him in the church would have no importance or benefit in the afterlife. Thus a strong sense of dissatisfaction and separation can be felt.
