An interesting aspect worth understanding is how murder is portrayed in the media through its various forms. It is even more interesting to know how female victims of murder are portrayed over time and how this reflects the norms of this current period.

Looking at the way in which female victims of murder were portrayed in the media beginning for the late 18th century in America and going on to the representations found in film today, it is quite obvious that a particular style exists by which murdered women are portrayed in society throughout the 20th century. It was in the 1800’s that women were first portrayed in either fictional or non-fictional events. They were portrayed as unmarried, young, innocent and beautiful and their death was shown as being a result of having premarital, innocent sexual intercourse. The way in which their bodies were usually described was very graphic and quite erotic (Cohen).
