This is an essay on The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale. The Wife is not good-looking, but strong and lively. She wears bright clothes and her intricate head-dress is pretentious rather than stylish: her hat is very wide. Her clothes are of high-quality and she wears nice shoes: the effect is possibly to advertise herself and her prosperity, rather than try unusual grace. She married when she was young, she had three wealthy older husbands, while her fourth husband was closer in age to herself, and he resisted all her efforts to control him.
What is the Wife of Bath like?
The Wife is not good-looking, but strong and lively. She wears bright clothes and her intricate head-dress is pretentious rather than stylish: her hat is very wide. Her clothes are of high-quality and she wears nice shoes: the effect is possibly to advertise herself and her prosperity, rather than try unusual grace. She married when she was young, she had three wealthy older husbands, while her fourth husband was closer in age to herself, and he resisted all her efforts to control him. But her most harsh fight has been with her fifth husband, though in the end, she did succeed in her efforts him. She was widowed five times but was keen to find a new husband. Having gotten the wealth of her assorted husbands, she wanted to be choosier, in selecting a new spouse.
Her practice of going on pilgrimage implies a pious woman, but her genuine motives for such journey are a love of quest, and the social prospects these trips may bring. As in the present situation, most pilgrims are men. She hopes that one of them might be the latest husband for whom she is searching. Her social skills are quite polished, especially her familiarity of “remedies of love”, an “art” which she understands.
