Aside from this usual view of a translator, there is a growing interest in viewing their importance. This is the increased focus on their significant contributions in the “successful cross-cultural communication and for the creation of functionally optimal target texts in target cultures” (Bedeker & Feinauer, 2006, p. 133).

The cultural cognizance, communicative function, and, most importantly, the experience of these Afghan interpreters as effective intersections between the Afghan people and the other international community allow them to play an important role in warranting this study.

These people are the ones who got “sound knowledge of the source text and the target culture, the function that the source text and the target text fulfill in their respective cultures, and the translation strategies available to the translator during the process of cultural transfer” (Bedeker & Feinauer, 2006, p. 135).

Afghan Translators/Interpreters National Situation

The role of culture in shaping the perceptions, beliefs and lived experience of the Afghan translator is a key consideration in this research effort (Dupree, 2002). Geller and Moss (2008), Emadi (2005) and Wardak (2004) wrote about the impact of Afghanistan’s myriad tribal, ethnic and language distinctions, as well as how these all contribute to a sense of national character despite the differences.

This research considers religion (Ayub & Kuovo, 2008; CIA Factbook, 2009) as a crucial element in the study, along with Dupree’s (2002) contention that Afghans are inclined to reject fanaticism. The patriarchal systems and beliefs in Afghanistan hurt the experience of Afghan women (Amiri, Ball, 2008; Barakat & Wardell, 2002; Chowdhury, Alam & Ahmed, 2006; Dupree, 2002; Hoodfar, 2007; Hunt & Sova, 2004; Islam, 2007; Miller et al., 2006; Qahir & Kirk, 2007; Roshan, 2004).

Furthermore, the differences between Afghan urban and rural life (Ayub & Kuovo, 2008; CIA Factbook, 2009; Emadi, 2005; Schutte, 2006; Wardak, 2004) illustrated differences of interpreters’ experiences that live in urban and rural communities.
