This increase in vehicles is also attributed to the increase of the population over the years. According to[1], there has been a remarkable increase in the population in 1965 to 2006 by about 15.5 million.

This is matched by an increase in the number of vehicles in the country by 15.8 million. The growth rate of vehicles increased by 360%, this was high as compared to 97% for the population. Huge increments in population and vehicle sizes translated to higher emissions, raw materials for manufacture of cars and loss of wildlife for road networks[1].

In the findings of this report, the growth rate of cars surpassed that of the population, particularly in the late 50s, 60s and early 70s. At this point in history, vehicle growth rates were registered to be 15% higher than those of the population. However, it was noted that in the late 70s the vehicle rates declined. This was attributed to the saturation of vehicles per household.
