Sample Multiculturalism in Adult Education  Term Paper

Words 1,320

This is a term paper on Multiculturalism in Adult Education from the Point of View of a Brazilian Immigrant. My Interview subject was Dr. William Mello PhD. Dr. Mello is an associated Professor in Labor Studies at Indiana University. He was raised in Brazil and acquired his education in Brazil and New York. My conversation with him turned out to be very interesting as he had very fascinating insights which I would not have been able to glean from someone coming from American upbringing and background would not be able to see things in this perspective.

When I asked about what he thought about diversity and multiculturalism, he thought that this is a new philosophy which aims at try to incorporate other parts of the society which in the past were considered a minority or too un important to make a difference.

These terms mean that our society comprises of social, racial and gender variables, which are “much broader” than what conventional ideas used to accept in the past. And that these variables have become entwined in the American culture and social structure.

When I asked that when he thought that multiculturalism was different from the traditional theory of melting pot he agreed that in that theory the aim was not to accept the cultural diversity that each individual brought from his native society and instead of accepting them with those characteristics, these people were expected to adopt new set of values and discard their previous traditions to be accepted by American society. His view seems to be a very comprehensive view of diversity and also acceptance of different cultural values.
