Depression is a disease which affects people of all age groups, all genders and all ethnicities. There is no limit as to how severe it may be; it affects individuals in various ways. Depression is an illness which has affected people for many years; ever since life has existed on Earth. In the biblical times, depression was referred to as ‘manic-depression’ in the Old Testament. It was the Greek physician, Hippocrates who was the very first person to have given depression an actual medical description. He termed depression as melancholia. The meaning of melancholia is ‘mental disorder.’
Depression is a disease which can be hereditary. If the parents of a child suffer from depression, the likelihood of that child being prone to depression is high with a 50% chance of him having to face depression (Professor Myrna Weissman). If one of the parents is depressed, the probability of the child suffering from depression increase two fold. If the mother and father both have depression as a disease, the chances of the child being affected increases four fold (Myrna Weissman). Due to my father, I inherited a depressive temperament due to which I have gone mad (Samuel Johnson).
