Sample Essay – Herzbergs Motivation
This can be associated to Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory. In his theory motivators like achievement, responsibility, recognition, growth, advancement and work are satisfiers; a lack of them does not lead to dissatisfaction.
However, hygiene factors like pay, interpersonal relationships, company policies, job security and administration reduce dissatisfaction, but do not create high motivation. This theory best explains the situation at western motels. The employees are leaving without reasons and yet the wages are good enough. According to Herzberg, pay only produces a short time motivation. This is because pay does effect motivation and recognition, which are both motivators. Pay for recognition will motivate more than pay for performance. Hence managers should make hygiene factors positive while motivating employees more.
