Sample Essay – Nihilism

Words 1,032

Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and have no purpose. In the context of this essay, nihilism relates to the lack of hope, the collapse of values, and the exclusion of Blacks from America’s middle class.

It could also relate to the disregard for human life and property rights in low-income neighborhoods, particularly in America’s inner cities.  The roots of nihilism in black America can be traced back to slavery, followed by decades of racial oppression, economic exploitation, bigotry, bias and prejudice – all of which tend to reinforce feelings of inferiority among black Americans and feelings of superiority among other racial and ethnic groups (Pratt, “Nihilism”).

Easy access to guns and drugs places young Black men in America in danger.  Young men find themselves unemployed and excluded from the new American dream. In a struggle for dignity and respect, some blacks living in inner city ghettos join gangs and end up dead, in prison, pr terrorizing their own communities.

The inability of society to address race based discrimination, the cycle of poverty, and other forms of injustice combined with the inability of the police to control violent crime and the spread of illegal drugs causes upwardly mobile blacks to leave the inner city.
