A study published in an issue of the JAMA-Journal of the American Medical Association examined the impact ETS exposure has on the acceleration of atherosclerosis (hardening of the artery).
The study showed results stating that non-smokers who were exposed to ETS had their arteries thickened 20 percent faster than non-smokers who had no exposure to second hand smoking (JAMA). Another study estimated that early cases of asthma in children, wheezing and bronchitis can all be attributed to second hand smoking (JAMA). When people smoke in public areas, not only do they put their own lives at risks but the lives of people around them are put at risk too. Studies on the number of people dying due to smoking showed that 8 out of every 10th person affected with a disease related to smoking was due to second hand smoking. However this causes rise to a number of questions.
A person who has been careful about his health, why should he suffer from problems related to those who smoke? When a family goes out to dinner, why should they have to smell smoke from someone else when that family has a right to smoke if they please? Is there any way to reach a compromise between the two?
