The Knights of Labor and Salvation Army Religion and Working Class Culture in Ontario, 1882-1890 by Lynne Marks deals with two organizations in the 1880s catering to the working class in Ontario. The essay looks at the two organizations Salvation Army and the Knights of Labor and their proclamation of religion to the working classes and how it changed the relationship of the working class’s belief, culture, and traditions. This as the author says has been an area of study neglected by historians. This essay in the beginning claims that religion was important to the working class but the sort of religion that appealed to them was different from the one that was prevalent.
The Salvation Army began in England and though it started as a religious movement but movement adopted the terms and the style of military-like language and behavior. Moreover, the primary behavior was to save the souls of the poor and the working class, through unconventional methods. The Kings of Labor on the other hand, was formed in Philadelphia to protect the rights of the workers, to improve their condition, and opposing the capitalist movement. They made local assemblies and started in Canada in 1882. Although it is hard to compare the arrival and the reception of both the organizations, but as the author says, people thronged to attend the meetings, mostly out of curiosity but many started to become followers of the Army.
